Ben Bartlett has both an Animal Husband BS and a DVM from Michigan State University, has taken livestock handling classes from Bud Williams and is a HMI Holistic Management educator. He had 30+ years as a Distinguished Livestock Extension Educator, has conducted SARE grant supported grazing and soil health trials and has almost 50 years of cattle and sheep grazing experience. Ben and his wife, Denise have a May lambing commercial flock of 400 sheep and summer graze about 150 stocker cattle on their farm in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. They enjoy traveling internationally to visit other grazing operations and a July 2017 trip to the British Grassland Society summer meeting offered more challenges to their grazing ideas. The tools of low stress livestock handling and Holistic Management have been huge factors in the success of their grazing program, the profitability of their livestock operations, and the quality of life that Denise and Ben enjoy.
